Why server response time matters for AI bots

I have an unhealthy obsession with Time to First Byte. I admit it. When I open a website, I automatically check the TTFB in DevTools. At parties. At birthdays. My family has given up commenting on it.

But that obsession is not without reason. TTFB is the first thing an AI crawler experiences of your website. It is the handshake. The first impression. And just like with people: if that first impression disappoints, there often is no second chance.

AI crawlers apply timeouts. GPTBot does not wait forever. If your server takes too long to respond, the connection is dropped. Your page is not indexed. Worse: with repeatedly slow responses, a crawler may decide to visit your domain less frequently. You are literally being ignored.

THE BENCHMARK

Google targets 200ms for TTFB. Anything above 500ms is problematic. Above 800ms? Then you have a serious problem that requires immediate attention. And yes, I speak from experience.

The three biggest culprits

After twenty years of hosting and web development, I can dream the causes of a high TTFB. It is almost always the same three.

1. Slow database queries

The number one culprit. A WordPress page can execute dozens of queries when loading. If those are not optimized, or if there is no index on the right columns, response time quickly increases.

My approach: install a query monitor (WordPress: Query Monitor plugin, Laravel: Debugbar or Telescope) and identify the slow queries. Add indexes where they are missing, fix N+1 patterns and store calculated values in the database instead of recomputing them with every request.

2. Insufficient caching

A dynamic website that queries the database, renders the template and assembles the output on every request: that is inherently slow. PHP and MySQL are fast, but not "read file from disk" fast or "fetch value from Redis" fast.

At Kobalt we configure multiple caching layers by default: object caching via Redis, full-page caching for anonymous visitors, CDN caching for static assets. That combination brings TTFB below 100ms for most sites. That is not magic, that is just solid infrastructure.

3. Undersized hosting

This is a sensitive topic, because nobody wants to hear their hosting is too cheap. But I am going to say it anyway.

Shared hosting for five euros a month is fine for a hobby site with a hundred visitors per day. For a business website that wants to serve AI bots? Insufficient. Shared CPU, shared memory, shared I/O with dozens of other sites. Moving to a VPS or managed platform like Laravel Cloud costs more, but TTFB typically halves immediately.

Step-by-step plan: from slow to fast

  1. Measure first. Google PageSpeed Insights, WebPageTest or GTmetrix. Do it from multiple locations. One measurement is no measurement.
  2. Identify the bottleneck. Server itself (high CPU)? Database (slow queries)? Application (inefficient code)? You can only fix what you understand.
  3. Implement Redis object caching if you have not already. The fastest way to reduce database load on dynamic sites.
  4. Enable full-page caching for anonymous visitors. WordPress: WP Rocket or W3 Total Cache. Laravel: response caching middleware.
  5. Check your PHP version. PHP 8.3 is significantly faster than 7.x. This is a free performance upgrade. Free! Why are you still running 7.4?
  6. Consider a CDN. Cloudflare's free plan already reduces TTFB significantly by caching responses at the edge.
FROM PRACTICE

At an e-commerce client with a TTFB of 1.2 seconds (!), we identified three N+1 query patterns and two missing database indexes. After fixing these, combined with Redis object caching, TTFB dropped to 180ms. No new server needed. Just smart analysis of existing code.

TTFB and AI crawl frequency

There is an indirect relationship I want to mention. AI crawlers track how quickly a website responds and adjust their crawl behavior accordingly. A consistently low TTFB signals: this server is stable and reliable. That increases the chance you are crawled more frequently and updated faster in the knowledge base of AI models.

It is a bit like bird behavior. (Yes, I am going to make that comparison.) Birds return to places where they reliably find food. AI crawlers return to servers that reliably respond fast. Consistency wins.

Below 200ms for your HTML document. With a CDN, below 100ms for cached pages is achievable. Static assets (CSS, JS) can be faster because browsers cache them. But the HTML document is your first impression.

Does my hosting location affect TTFB for AI bots?

Yes. AI crawlers typically connect from data centers in the US. Server in Europe? Then geographical distance adds latency. A CDN with edge locations in the US largely solves that. Also consider whether your hosting location makes sense for your target audience.

Can I measure TTFB per page or only for the entire site?

Per page. Tools like WebPageTest and Chrome DevTools give you the TTFB for each individual request. Useful for seeing which pages lag behind. Pages with complex queries or a lot of dynamic content typically have a higher TTFB. That is where your improvement potential lies.
